Two-way prepositions

Prepositions such as in, auf and an can take either accusative or dative. Ask Wohin? for direction and Wo? for location.

What you will learn

  3. 03Choose dative for location

Direction and location

QuestionCaseExample

Learn the article change together with the preposition.

Distinguish placement verbs from position verbs.

In short

What to remember

Use accusative for a destination and dative for a fixed place. The same preposition can take either case.

German vs English

Closest English idea
where to? onto the table · where? on the table
Key difference
English prepositions usually do not mark this contrast with noun endings; German case marks the direction/location distinction.
01

Ich hänge das Bild an die Wand.

I hang the picture on the wall.

02

Das Bild hängt an der Wand.

The picture is hanging on the wall.
