Je … desto/umso describes a proportional relationship: as one change increases or decreases, another change changes too. Both parts use comparative forms.

Core pattern
Je + comparative + … + verb, desto / umso + comparative + verb + subject …The je clause is a subordinate clause with the finite verb at the end. The desto/umso clause is a main clause with the finite verb in second position.

Je mehr ich für die Prüfung lerne, desto größer ist mein Erfolg.
The more I study for the exam, the greater my success is.
Je früher wir losfahren, umso weniger Stau haben wir.
The earlier we leave, the less traffic we have.
Je länger du übst, desto sicherer sprichst du.
The longer you practise, the more confidently you speak.
Common mistakes
Use a comparative in both parts.
Put the finite verb at the end of the je clause.
Do not use je … desto for one isolated event without a proportional relationship.
