Indirekte Fragen

Indirect questions make a request for information more polite and formal. Once a question is attached to an introductory clause, it follows subordinate-clause word order: use a comma and put the finite verb at the end.
What you will learn
Three clear goals
- 01Turn yes/no questions into indirect questions with ob.
- 02Keep the question word in W-questions.
- 03Use the comma and final verb position correctly.
Direct and indirect questions
| Question type | Direct | Indirect |
|---|---|---|
| Yes / no | Hast du ein Buch? | Ich würde gern wissen, ob du ein Buch hast. |
| W-question | Wer bist du? | Darf ich fragen, wer du bist? |
| W-question | Wann beginnt der Kurs? | Können Sie mir sagen, wann der Kurs beginnt? |
Two core patterns
Introductory phrase, + ob + … + verb. · Introductory phrase, + W-word + … + verb.Use ob for yes/no questions. Keep wer, wie, wo, wann, was, woher, wohin, or wie viel in W-questions. In both patterns, the finite verb goes to the end of the subordinate clause.
Polite introductions
Ich möchte wissen, …
I would like to know …
Können Sie mir sagen, …
Can you tell me …
Können Sie mich informieren, …
Can you inform me …
Ich würde gern wissen, …
I would like to know …
Wissen Sie, … / Weißt du, …
Do you know …
Darf ich fragen, …
May I ask …
Comma and verb position
Können Sie mir sagen, ob der Zug pünktlich kommt?
Can you tell me whether the train is on time?
Use a comma after the main clause; kommt is at the end.Ich möchte wissen, wo ich das Formular abgeben kann.
I would like to know where I can hand in the form.
The modal verb kann is at the end of the subordinate clause.Weißt du, wie viel das Ticket kostet?
Do you know how much the ticket costs?
Common mistakes
Use ob, not dass, for a yes/no question.
Do not keep direct-question order: ob du … hast, not ob hast du …
Do not omit the comma between the introductory clause and the indirect question.
What to remember
Use ob for yes/no questions and retain the W-word for W-questions. An indirect question is a subordinate clause, so the finite verb comes at the end.
German vs English
- German pattern
- After an introductory phrase and a comma, use ob or a W-word; the conjugated verb goes to the end.
- Closest English idea
- English indirect questions also use statement-like word order: ‘Do you know where he lives?’
- Key difference
- German has a final verb position in the subordinate clause; English keeps the verb after the subject.
Ich weiß nicht, wo er wohnt.
I do not know where he lives.
Können Sie mir sagen, ob der Kurs beginnt?
Can you tell me whether the course is starting?
